Bookbinding in the Edmonton region

2021
We have continued our suspension of in-person meetings until it’s safe to gather again and will look at setting up online meetings for early spring. We’ve extended the deadline for our “Blue” book exchange to the end of March to allow new members to participate and have opened the “Opposites” group project to both past and present members. We will be printing the concertina lino editions during late March/April at the SNAP printshop in Edmonton and will also offer a second run of prints and cards from previous letterpress projects. We are gathering photographs of past Chapter exhibitions for galleries on our upcoming Facebook page which will be online by the end of March.

December 2020
Our chapter hasn’t been able to meet in person this year and we had to postpone our annual book challenge and exchange which was to have taken place at the end of March 2020. We’ve always enjoyed getting together to look through the new books and feature them prominently each year in our Chapter exhibitions, particularly at the Edmonton, St. Albert, and Sherwood Park libraries. We’ve decided to pursue other group projects in the interim. The most recent was a card project printed on the Vandercook SP20 at SNAP’s terrific new workshop in downtown Edmonton.cards01Our next project will be a group concertina of 4.5″ lino graphics on the theme of “Opposites”. Lino kits were put together the first week in December and the project will be printed late February/early March 2021 depending upon printshop availability.

At our last formal meeting in the boardroom at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, we had decided to reduce our meetings to bimonthly until spring. Several of our most active members continued with informal lunch meetings monthly until, unfortunately, the Sars-Cov-2 virus ended our group meetings indefinitely. We hope to resume via electronic meeting over the next few months..Milner wp01

The Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild is a national organization established in 1983 to provide contact and support for those interested in the book arts. The CBBAG Alberta North chapter has members from the northern part of the province and our meetings are held in various locations in Edmonton.

Membership in CBBAG (pronounced “cabbage”) is open to all those who share book-related interests and support these goals:
•  to create a spirit of community among hand book workers and with the book community;
•  to promote greater public awareness of the book arts;
•  and to increase educational opportunities and foster excellence through exhibitions, workshops, and publications.

The Alberta North chapter has meetings several times a year. We organize exhibitions and displays to promote book arts in the community and initiate projects challenging our members to explore new book forms and themes.
